Sensate Focus
Sensate focus is a structured, evidence-based therapeutic approach used to address concerns related to intimacy, sexual functioning, anxiety, and connection. Rather than focusing on performance or outcomes, sensate focus helps individuals or couples reconnect with physical sensations, presence, and emotional safety.
This approach emphasizes mindful attention to sensation, gradually reducing pressure, self-criticism, and anxiety that can interfere with intimacy. Exercises are introduced in a stepwise, collaborative manner and are always adapted to your comfort level, values, and goals.
Sensate focus can be helpful for concerns such as low desire, arousal difficulties, pain with intimacy, performance anxiety, or when medication side effects have impacted sexual functioning. It is often used alongside psychotherapy and, when appropriate, medication adjustments or deprescribing strategies.
My approach to sensate focus is gentle, non-judgmental, and consent-centered, creating space for curiosity, trust, and reconnection, both with yourself and, if applicable, with your partner.
